    Cité médiévale (Provins, France)

Provins was the capital of the Counts of Champagne and developed as a centre of trading fairs in the middle ages. These were large events dealing in wholesale goods whose importance extended far beyond the immediate locality. Situated at a north/south and east/west crossroads, the markets attracted traders from all over Europe. Provins could also offer security guaranteed by the Counts. The town was laid out specifically to host the fairs and their ancillary activities and much of this has been preserved. The fortified cité includes many classified monuments such as the Tour César, the ramparts and the covered markets. The whole complex has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
