Popradske Pleso Lake (Štrbské Pleso, Slovakia)
Popradske Pleso (Poprad Lake) is a mountain tarn located near the High Tatra resort of Strbske Pleso. It lies in the lower part of the Zlomisková dolina, part of the major Tatra valley of Mengusovská dolina, at the altitude of 1494m. The lake has an of over 6ha and is around 17m deep. The water in the lake is green in colour and has a temperature that doesn’t exceed 16 degrees. The lake is surrounded by Tatra peaks, including the Poprad Ridge (Popradski Hreben), Fortress Ridge (Hreben Bast) and Ostrva. Popradske Pleso is a popular destination for walks, easily accessible either on Tatra Magistrala from Strbske Pleso resort (approximately 1h 15min) or on the blue marked trial that follows a tarmac road (closed to normal cars) from Popradske Pleso electric train station (1h).). From Popradske Pleso, a number of high-country paths can be taken including the ascent of Rysy as well as the Tatra Magistrala to Ostrva Saddle and further on to Batizovské pleso. There are two mountain hotels with restaurants by the lake. The symbolic cementery of those that died in the mountains is a 30min walk away.
