St Trophimus is thought to have been the first bishop of Arles in the 3rd century and his remains were moved here in the 12th century from Les Alyscamps. The church underwent several reconstructions but the building we see today is 12th century Romanesque with gothic additions. Its main splendour is the doorway, in the form of a triumphal arch, with its intricately carved figures and tympanum depicting the Last Judgement. The carvings on the capitals in the cloister are in a similar style. Inside the nave is high and the aisles narrow. The gothic chancel provides a contrast to the barrel vaulting of the main part of the church. Arles’™ collection of Roman and medieval monuments, including St Tropha®me, is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. The church is open all day except between the hours of 12 noon and 2pm.
