Wentworth (Virginia Water, United Kingdom)
Wentworth is a sports and health club near Virginia Water. It is best known for its golf courses: three 18-hole courses and a 9-hole par 3. The full length courses are the West Course, East Course and Edinburgh Course, and of these the first is best known as a championship course hosting the World Matchplay Championship from 1964 to 2007 and the BMW PGA Championship from 1984. It was recently redesigned by Ernie Els. Although Wentworth is a private members club, visitors can play Mondays to Fridays on payment of green fees and production of a handicap certificate. They also have access to the clubhouse facilities. Other sports and facilities on offer include tennis, with 13 courts, indoor and outdoor pools, gym, dance studio and spa. The land and the country house, the Wentworths, was a private estate, which passed through several owners and was developed as a golf course in the 1920s. The house is now the club house and has dining room, bar, lounge and overnight accommodation facilities. Private functions and weddings can be catered for. There is a pro shop and tuition is available.
